“the prosecution is alleging that “pollutants” entered the Eisner Cove wetland from the Mount Hope development through siltation and runoff, turning the water “from a nice cup of black tea to a cup of tea with milk in it.””

For the past three years, we've been trialling a new process for returning wild brown trout to the upper part of the River Mel, a beautiful chalk stream in Cambridgeshire 🐟 The trout population had gradually vanished, due to pressures like abstraction, siltation, and habitat loss.

Ah, yes, that old biological urge to improve water quality, reduce flooding, increase biodiversity, reduce wildfires, recharge groundwater tables, reduce siltation and sequester carbon.

this is such a complicated siltation we must not rush to judgement, only I am wise enough to realize this

In their native range of the western U.S., steelhead have declined due to a combo of habitat modification (dams), siltation (from forestry) + erosion (land development) - several populations are even listed as threatened or endangered #25DaysofFishmas www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/stee...

The Western creek chubsucker is considered endangered in Michigan, in part because it’s sensitive to siltation. Heavy rains that increase run-off from surrounding agricultural fields can cause stream silt levels to increase and clog their gills #25DaysofFishmas mnfi.anr.msu.edu/species/desc...

As a fish that needs clear, fast-moving streams + rivers, the gilt darter can be a canary in a coal mine when it comes to pollution and habitat loss - many of the extirpations from its historical range have been caused by increased siltation as a result of run-off + building of dams #25DaysofFishmas

Been there (Skokomish Valley). The fish are amazing no matter how much we throw in their way. The river regularly floods because of logging/siltation in the Olympic foot hills and ag diking.

Yet "climate emergency" is a phrase that itself discounts all interconnected hydromorphical causes, like intense industrial farming, legacy canalisation and dredging of rivers (downstream siltation), and eutrophication leading to increased sediment and more uniform, shallow channels.
Absolutely terrifying - the government is leaving communities utterly exposed to the effects of the climate emergency. We urgently need a plan with binding targets for how this govt will protect us as extreme heat and flooding worsen in the years ahead.

So one of the things we know that Plato seemingly didn't is that humans massively accelerated erosion and siltation throughout the Mediterranean world. The chokepoint the Spartans defended at Thermopylae is now miles wide.

The gilt darter has a disjointed range throughout the Mississippi/Ohio River drainages + parts of the southern #GreatLakes basin. They’re considered extirpated (locally extinct) from several places in the Midwest where they were previously found, mostly due to siltation + pollution #25DaysofFishmas

Of course the real stinker is that the tidal extent is nowhere near as predictable as all this. It all changes in time, because the ground moves (sandbanks, marshes, sea defences), there are storms, sea-level rise, and the tidal range can change due to dredging or siltation of channels.

can't. We warned his gov't MANY times about the potential Lohr's development at #eisnercovewetland could damage the watercourse. Have complaint 6 times now about siltation in the water. Gov't doesn't care. They prove that every day

Siltation threatens the structural safety of high-pile wharves.
Field data and physical modeling reveal how groynes enhance lateral flow and turbulence to mitigate sediment accumulation around port structures.

A single step on a non-durable surface triggers a surprising chain of ecological effects. Once vegetation is stressed, the protective cover disappears. Bare soil becomes vulnerable to wind & water erosion, & increased siltation.

Harfleur in Normandy was a major medieval port on the River Lézarde, but its important link to the River Seine was severely affected by siltation over the centuries. As a result, the port of Harfleur was replaced as France’s principal northern seaport when Le Havre was built in 1517.

ICYWW, yes that's the same place, viewed from slight differing angles. The large boulder in the c.1900 image is gone. Would be interesting to know when/how it was removed. And the riverbed is now much higher than in 1900, perhaps reflecting grazing-induced land erosion and resulting siltation.
