Residents warn commissioners border-wall work could jeopardize county water intakes
Residents and commissioners discussed hydrology findings and expressed concern that border-wall construction could shift channels and cause siltation that would impair Zapata County water intakes and treatment; commissioners agreed to pursue engineering options and funding and to pursue an RFQ for a new hydrology consultant.

Hilsa haul takes a nosedive
Hilsa production is declining after a steady rise over two decades due to water pollution from three power plants located near the Hilsa Sanctuary, siltation of rivers and overfishing, raising concerns about the much-loved fish’s sustainability and affordability. “I am really worried about the hilsa population,” said Anisur Rahman, former director of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), who has researched hilsa for many decades. In fiscal 2024-25, hilsa production stood at 5 lakh tonnes, down 5.5 percent year-on-year, according to data from the Department of Fisheries. Industrial waste and plastic pollution are among the most consistently cited factors behind hilsa’s decline across Bangladesh’s major river systems, but three power plants in Patuakhali and Barguna appear to pose the greatest threat. Image A study published in the Bangladesh Journal of Physics in June 2025 found that the Payra thermal power plant is disrupting the reproduction, growth and survival of hilsa and other fish species in the area. The coal-fired Payra power plant receives coal-carrying vessels, creating risks of oil spills, while fly ash and discharged wastewater could seriously affect the plankton-rich waters that serve as breeding grounds for hilsa, said Khorshed Alam, an associate professor at Barishal University, who led...

An intelligent model for surface and subsurface water simulation considering the effect of ...
Siltation in stormwater pipes is an important contributor to urban flooding, yet its effects on pipe-scale hydraulic resistance and surface–subsurface flow exchange are not adequately represented in existing models. This study integrates the multi-factor coupling probability sedimentation function, Chaos adaptive genetic algorithm for optimization of probabilistic deposition, and attention bidirectional long short-term memory neural network, and proposes an intelligent prediction model for the sedimentation of pipeline siltation particles. On this basis, the instantaneous continuity control equation of fluid dynamic evolution process, instantaneous momentum conservation control equation, sedimentation pipeline flow control equation, and translation control equation are introduced to establish a high‑resolution model of overflow characteristics in sediment‑clogged pipes. Finally, by integrating the water flow exchange control equations of clogged pipes in different scenarios, a flood evolution simulation model considering the influence of pipe clogging is proposed. The comparative analysis results show that when the clogging degree increases from 0 to 0.3, the average accuracy and correlation coefficient evolution intervals of high‑resolution model of overflow characteristics in sediment‑clogged pipes are [0.934, 0.951] and [0.975, 0.986], respectively. Hydraulic analysis further showed that pipe siltation reduced conveyance capacity through the combined effects of effective-flow-area reduction and additional sediment-bed resistance, while the blocked flow...

Though this is a pre edit print, I do think this gives a illustration of where modeling is evolving when it comes to new technologies but also its current limitations at least when it comes to flood simulations

In this post, Sridhar Raghavan traces coasts (karai) as produced by silt, sea and coastal engineering. As an agent of history, siltation in the Kaveri Delta renders the karai, where (post-)colonial engineering attempts control, as a site of dialectic of land and water.

'These water bodies have been swallowed by reckless urban expansion, concrete encroachments, siltation, pollution & decades of instit. indifference. That is 74% of a region’s liquid heritage, lost. Of 697 lakes surveyed, 315, nearly 45%, have not just been reduced or degraded but erased completely.'

Hearing set for Lateral 12 repairs after engineer cites siltation and 1955 design limits
An engineer told the joint board that Lateral 12 is largely silted and would need regrading on roughly one-third of its length; the board set a public hearing for Sept. 15 to consider assessments and a roughly $100,000 repair estimate.

Overgrown but they refuse to selective cut because $$$. Clear cut only. California used to do selective cutting. Not sure anymore.

Why is clear cutting an issue? Siltation of nearby rivers destroying the fish ecosystem for one.

Forests survived fires just fine without us. Plating trees too close 👎

Of course the real stinker is that the tidal extent is nowhere near as predictable as all this. It all changes in time, because the ground moves (sandbanks, marshes, sea defences), there are storms, sea-level rise, and the tidal range can change due to dredging or siltation of channels.

Baseline assessment of sedimentary heavy metals and ecological risks in the high-siltation Gorai River, Bangladesh
Heavy metal pollution has become a significant global issue owing to its toxicity, bioaccumulative characteristics, persistence, and non-degradable nature in aquatic ecosystems1,2,3. Rivers, particularly in developing countries such as Bangladesh, are under increasing pressure due to the growing level of pollutants; while, many river systems lack extensive and continuous monitoring of the environment4,5. Sediments in aquatic environments act both as reservoirs and sources of pollutants, which demonstrate the history of contamination of the environment6,7. As a result, the sediments have become essential matrices in evaluation of the extent and distribution of heavy metal contamination. Metal behavior in sediments is complex and dynamic and influenced by processes such as dissolution, sorption, desorption, and precipitation8,9. The contamination of sediments with heavy metals may be dangerous to human health both directly and indirectly. The high concentrations of heavy metals found in a water body can lead to significant uptake by aquatic organisms, particularly fish, resulting in bioaccumulation within tissues and organs10. Furthermore, seafood, including seaweed, can absorb heavy metals from sediments, increasing the likelihood of heavy metals to infiltrate the food web and impact human health11,12. Moreover, river water is usually used in various domestic, and recreational activities, which may increase human exposure...

Our streams are threatened by logging siltation, and now, rural NC faces predatory data centers. They promise jobs, but it’s a mirage. Once built, they leave automated hubs that monopolize our power grid, drain our water, and pollute our air. We cannot let them drain our communities.
