Mark Kenny's article explores the erosion of social civility in contemporary Australia, using personal anecdotes like an SUV driver littering and a woman discarding trash to illustrate broader societal trends. He links declining interpersonal trust to political polarization, citing studies showing reduced neighbourly interactions and trust in institutions. The piece references the rise of One Nation and ANUpoll data indicating Australia's interpersonal trust has fallen to 5.32 on a 10-point scale. Kenny argues that toxic political rhetoric and social media amplification have contributed to this breakdown, exemplified by Senator Bernie Moreno's aggressive comments towards Dr. Anthony Fauci. The article questions whether economic inequality or cultural shifts are primary drivers of this social fragmentation, emphasizing the need for renewed community bonds in a divided society.
