Appropriating slang isn't just an annoyance, it defeats a crucial sociolinguistic purpose and endangers minorities. Slang serves as a constantly evolving shibboleth; a linguistic passcode to identify outsiders and safeguard cultural spaces. Proliferating it outside equips dangerous folks to slip in.

I’m confused how a sociolinguistic who studied linguistic variation comes out to be an ultra prescriptivist about the language people use to talk. Just unfortunate how the AI stuff really warps people’s minds. (That, or the fact that public intellectualizing makes people into caricatures.)

Re: "Woke." The GOP stole a word from Black American culture that had it's own sociolinguistic trajectory, wrapped up all socially progressive ideas w/in that word, attached the word to academic verbiage about these same ideas, & then proceeded to use the word like a multi-purpose voodoo doll.
"Woke" became a dysphemism c. ~2020. Using the word--always w/o definition--has allowed detractors to attack equality & other social good thru connotation & flimsy association. Whereas euphemisms disguise underlying "badness," dysphemisms disguise underlying goodness www.alternet.org/2021/05/righ...
