You wouldn't believe how many readers have "corrected" Shauna when she's used Irish colloquialisms...

It's absolute madness. And from a sociolinguistics perspective: what the fuck are you even thinking? If you don't understand language as a moveable feast... why are you sending editorial notes?!

While it's not the biggest problem with this administration is defunding all of social sciences, it sucks b/c this administration is basically providing a whole range of test cases for sociolinguistics.
a sure sign that something is "highly accepted" is if you have to threaten to impose the power of the state against those who don't accept it

Was teaching about the shift towards performativity/social-constructivist perspectives in sociolinguistics yesterday and a student posted this meme on our course page. Fairly accurate representation of first wave --> third wave sociolinguistics.

n.b., /n/ refers to (ING) variation.

This is such a cool paper!

Use of the Manchester ‘happy’ vowel, (‘happee’ vs ‘happeh’) is an clearly striated by social class and unexpectlily stable over generations (which is weird for a vowel)

Also, apparently, Mancunians can’t really consciously hear it.

Look, if I need to hire someone about how to bridge formal syntax and sociolinguistics, modeling dialectal variation in African American Vernacular English within the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), I'll hire her.

Literally, that was her thesis.

😊😊 let’s! Idk if you all are interested in co-edited books (with chapters from editors, too), but we’re pretty proud of this one. It delves into sociolinguistics, tech, and liberatory practices (hard side-eye at AI and all that mess)

I have a version kind of like Dan's, that goes from Grice-style communicative intentions, then with what we know about animals and kids' mindreading, conventions, then variation in conventions (Sapir-Whorf kind of stuff), then sociolinguistics, Ethan's stuff, etc. docs.google.com/document/d/1...
