#solar system
Exploring the solar system is good and important for science and beneficial to life on earth. However it is a catastrophically stupid idea to extend that to “we should colonize other planets.”
"A growing body of evidence from both orbital and surface missions suggests that Martian dust is chemically reactive, potentially toxic, and likely to induce inflammatory responses in biological systems" www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
If you should go to Mars, don't inhale.

As well as not tasting the dust.

There could even be one bigger than Pluto that we haven't found yet. We'll know in the next few years as more data are analyzed. Exciting times to be a solar system scientist! /fin

Patrick Stewart doesn't have an asteroid named after him. Team Inner Solar System do your thing. #DPS2026
For many space scientists, Patrick Stewart *was* Capt. Picard—a pacifistic, stoic diplomat who hated megalomaniacs.

For @nytimes.com, I wrote about how he, and Star Trek, inspired countless cosmic explorers, from astronomers and astronauts to planetary defenders.

Stewart’s iconic “Star Trek” character inspired astronomers and astronauts in countless ways: “You were the captain of my childhood,” one astrophysicist said.

In our solar system, solar wind contributes mainly to aurorae; Io and Enceladus also contribute to aurorae of Jupiter and Saturn respectively.

So astronomers turned to our solar system to understand the mystery of the infrared emission from methane on W1935.
