So Target has *refused* to build a retail store in the city limits of Detroit for DECADES but they can build a “sortation” center?? The DEI bullshit was one thing, now my hatred is deeply personal.

"We’re not organizing from scratch—organization already exists in how management has set up the shifts, departments, and jobs. Amazon sets the shift pattern in Sortation Centers to make them particularly high-turnover," writes Amazon worker Paul Blundell: labornotes.org/blogs/2025/0...

As a longtime Amazon warehouse worker and union activist, I was glad to see Professor Ben Fong’s strategic analysis calling on the union movement to focus Amazon organizing on the Sortation Centers. B...

Extremist sortation coupled with a reflexive normalization of anything with a major party brand is a genuinely toxic combination for the Republic.

Organizing Amazon will require an understanding of the company’s vulnerabilities—like Sortation Centers, hubs that are some of the weakest links in its supply chain—and a strategy for taking advantage of them, writes Benjamin Y. Fong: labornotes.org/blogs/2024/1...
Amazon’s Sortation Centers Should Be a Key Target for Labor
Organizing Amazon is obviously a daunting project. Not only is the company willing to use all the tricks of its notoriously anti-union competitor Walmart, but it’s also growing rapidly. In 2022 and 20...

"While I agree Sortation Centers are clear choke points in Amazon’s system, this analysis is only one component of an effective organizing strategy," Amazon warehouse worker Paul Blundell writes in response to Benjamin Y. Fong's piece last month: labornotes.org/blogs/2025/0... 1/2

they're currently using these awesome deli slicer kinda things for the machine sorted mail that rapidly photograph each letter sent through, converts the handwriting into info that's legible to the machine, and then sorts it based on different functions. shit rules.

Finally! I know I only ordered the Amalgam Omnibus last week & IST shipped it Monday but UPS kept flagging it w/ "sortation delays" & other exceptions so the estimated delivery date kept changing. Happy it's arrived & it came on a good day cuz the rest of the fam is gone so I can nerd out in peace.

Fourthly, by increasing the amount of valuable materials like aluminum, copper and lithium recovered from Municipal Solid Waste and kept out of landfills we're all better off.

Please consider working to help convince your community to install a similar sortation system as a local climate action.

Post-collection sorting, however, can be pricey, requiring magnets, heat & separation of alloys. In those area with separate aluminum streams, aluminum is cheaper to process & less likely to be transferred to landfill

will be sending this every time an academic asks me "how can I help labor?": help figure out organizing targets, based on worker insights! labor leverage depends on how the job isolates or connects coworkers. you gotta learn that firsthand. labornotes.org/blogs/2025/0...

I just heard a neat new phrase: "sortation delay". When UPS accidentally ships your thing to Minnesota instead of Southern California, that's a "sortation delay".

Thinking about telling my boss that my work this week is experiencing a "sortation delay", and next week doesn't look too hot either.
