#spatially
👋 Meet new #HFScout and quantitative cell biologist Amy Gladfelter, who uses microscopy, biophysical & genetic approaches to study syncytial cells (multinucleated cells) and how these large cells spatially organize the cytoplasm and sense their shape.

Finally a visual representation that would bring the genome together, even if it kept the genes apart spatially.

not primarily reasoning spatially and thus optimizing for recency is a concept i'm gonna have to rotate in my head for a bit

A spatiotemporal cancer cell trajectory underlies glioblastoma heterogeneity - Nature
A deep single-cell and spatial multi-omic atlas of human glioblastoma is generated, pairing transcriptomic, epigenomic and genomic profiling, and tracing glioblastoma tumour heterogeneity to a stereotyped and spatially patterned trajectory of cancer cells.

Woah. What parameters does the network use? It should have spatially varying info about the shapes around for proper occlusion, right?

These snow observations were collected at 1,345 sites in the Soviet Union between 1966-1990; over 200 sites were sampled between 1991-1996. This NOAA@NSIDC data set holds 10-day average station snow depth data and spatially averaged transect observations. https://nsidc.org/data/g01170/versions/1

I've been holding out on a game that's spatially engaging and doesn't have a map included. I think Queen's Domain is it!
(Penguin Colony would be an interesting one but do immense psychic damage)
I just released a new keepsake game- Bleed Map!

You play alongside a video game of your choice, creating a map of the digital space. At the same time, you'll be prompted to record emotions and thoughts from your everyday life that bleed into the experience.

AI maps brain microstates spatially 🧠

A new deep learning model, Conv-VaDE, clusters EEG microstates while preserving their spatial shape, offering a generative decoder for inspecting average brain states.

I’ll add that it’s happening at the exact moment where the affordances of *energy* technologies no longer favour centralized + concentrated power in the same way as fossil fuels do (renewables are spatially distributed and the efficiency doesn’t increase with size as it does for thermal generation).
Holy shit this quote.

Can peat moss 🪴reveal ancient histories of mining? It seems so, since they reveal Pb levels. “By connecting environmental archives with mining, transport, & urban demand, this framework provides a scalable approach for reconstructing the long-term organization of metal production and circulation…”
Rise and spread of lead-silver metallurgy deciphered from peatland archives
How mining has shaped long-term economic and political landscapes across Europe and the Mediterranean remains poorly understood, largely because archaeological evidence is spatially fragmented and ore...
