"pokemon go to the polls" might be one of the most enduring pieces of political speechwriting within the last decade

I’ve written speeches for others. I’ve given speeches. I’ve taught speechwriting.

This is brilliant.
"The president wasn't even mad about the Saddam Hussein comparison! But he was very upset about the Cheesecake Factory" -- here's Obama's full riff about the "phony outrage" over his Trump/Cheesecake Factory comments and how it illustrates that "these are not serious people"

I think that’s partly because the actual process of legislation through congressional committees is difficult to dramatise whereas the speechwriting element is fun and cool.

This is a great line. His/their speechwriting is impeccable.
Talarico: "We are literally going up against the richest man in the world. This election is a battle between powers that be & powers that ought to be. The powers that be have chosen their candidate. They have bought and paid for Paxton... I want to be a senator for every Texan who can't afford one"

The best speeches don't sound like speeches. They sound like you, telling one true story that matters. That's where we start.

I've been gushing for weeks about Danielle Daniel's keynote at @canscaip.bsky.social's #PYI2026 conference. She showed us, without ever commenting on it, how to weave theme throughout a piece of writing. Exquisite. Perfection. Let me tell you about it too: erinalladin.substack.com/p/can-speech...
Can speechwriting teach you to harness your book’s theme?

The third installment of Leah Abrams’s column on speechwriting and rhetoric examines the sound bite. She covers Sontag’s apprehensions about aphorisms, the nature of virality today, and the proliferation of AI propaganda.

Starting a petition to ban the use of the phrase “it’s been the honour of a lifetime”.

Trite BS that every exiting politician seems to use these days.

Wonder if it’s a result of AI speechwriting?

His speechwriting and delivery were always admirable, and he is naturally funny. Sadly, Trump’s all those too, and abhorrent. Arguably peak Trump was more effective. Charismatic leaders are less interesting to me now than being principled ones that prevent kids from being harmed by our country.

“What happens when the story of self is met with a ‘proverbial shrug’?”

In the second installment of her new web column on speechwriting, Leah Abrams probes the limits of the rhetorical model Obama used to introduce himself to America in ‘08.
