✨Happy holidays to all! 🎄Christmas tree worms (Spirobranchus giganteus) in mustard hill coral (Porites astreoides). This coral shows notable genetic diversity and connectivity across its range, but such info for the worm species is sparse. #wormWednesday #reefmas 🪱🧬🦑🌎 🪸

Today’s feature is a really funny creature, the Christmas Tree Worm or Spirobranchus giganteus. Loving the different colours. #photography #underwaterphotography #fiji #savasiisland #savasiislandresort #scuba #scubadiving #christmastreeworm #marinelife #wildlife

A tangle of Keelworm (Spirobranchus triqueter) casings. These are the protective calcareous tubes that Keelworms build and inhabit on rocky or hard surfaces. These ones have been abandoned and knocked loose from whatever surface they were once attached to.

Merry Christmas to; Spirobranchus giganteus, the Christmas tree worm! Named for their bright colorful crowns that resemble artificial trees, these polychaetes live a sessile life boared into hard corals.

I'm super excited about these worms, so this will be a long thread!

What could be more Christmas-y than a tube worm? Meet Spirobranchus giganteus, the Christmas Tree Worm.

It burrows into corals in tropical waters, adding to the protection offered by its calcareous tube.

The "Christmas trees" are mouth structures serving both feeding and respiration.

I've never seen a green color morph, so this is the most Christmas-y christmas tree worm (Serpulidae: Spirobranchus giganteus) that I can find on my camera roll. Paired with these green zoanthids it *almost* does the job...

Meet Spirobranchus giganteus, the colorful Christmas tree worm! 🎄

These marine worms are famous for their spiral christmas tree-like gills.

They create underwater “forests” of beauty, enhancing coral reef health by filtering plankton and improving water quality!

Merry Christmas! 🌈 💙
