I ran out to the pet store yesterday evening cuz I needed water conditioner but I ended up coming home with a few more fish.

The skirt tetras needed a larger group size to feel secure - or at least that’s that I’m telling myself 😂

This kissing gourami (Helostoma temminckii) isn't breathing. He's eating.

Kissing gouramis depend nearly completely on atmospheric oxygen which they breathe with their labyrinth organ. Their gills serve as a filter for plankton.

We finally have the first inhabitants of the new aquarium! 🥳
It‘s a group of similis corys! :)
The sandy substrate was chosen specifically for them so they get to do some digging for food. I love this species, but they‘re still a bit shy.

A full shot of the new 120L aquarium I set up. It is a island composition of somewhat large, rounded pebbles alongside some river drift wood that is peaking out the water at a few spots. This takes advantage of the open top. The sandy bottom is a brownish-yellow tone. A group of seven out of ten smudge-spot corys (Hoplisoma smilis) sitting right up to the glass. Lake Victoria cichlids are much less popular than Malawi. In part, it’s because many Malawians are colorful all the time, while colors change a lot more due to mood or social status in Vics. But in the right mood, Vics will display some of the most striking color schemes of all fishes. #fishkeeping
