Yes, but the "Christmas tree" structures aren't actually part of the coral, but rather tube worms that live within it! They're serpulid polychaetes in the genus Spirobranchus (probably S. giganteus) that stick those highly modified mouthparts out to sift bits of food out of the water.

Christmas Tree Worms: Tiny, Colorful Treasures of the Reef
The ocean is full of fascinating creatures, but few are as eye-catching as Christmas tree worms (Spirobranchus giganteus). With their vibrant, spiral-shaped crowns, these small marine worms look like underwater holiday decorations. But beyond their beauty, they play an important role in coral reef ecosystems. Let’s dive into three fascinating facts about these mesmerizing reef dwellers. Christmas tree worms get their name from their striking, spiraled plumes, which resemble tiny Christmas trees swaying in the ocean.

"Meet the CHRISTMAS TREE WORM, a marine species that burrows into corals from the Caribbean to the Indo-Pacific. Far removed from its earthworm cousins and from the world of snow and fir trees, Spirobranchus giganteus ... puts on a stunning display."

The Christmas tree worm (Spirobranchus giganteus) is a vibrant marine worm residing in coral reefs. Its spiral plumes serve as gills and feeding structures, allowing it to filter food. Highly sensitive to movement, the worm quickly retracts into its coral tube when threatened, re-emerging once the environment stabilizes.

Merry Christmas to; Spirobranchus giganteus, the Christmas tree worm! Named for their bright colorful crowns that resemble artificial trees, these polychaetes live a sessile life boared into hard corals.

I'm super excited about these worms, so this will be a long thread!

Did you know that there are real "Christmas trees" on coral reefs?

The colorful spiral tube worm (Spirobranchus giganteus) is called the "Christmas Tree Worm" because of its bright, spiral tentacles.

Merry Christmas!
