Andrew Appleby is known in Orkney as the “Harray Potter” and is also the president of the John Rae Society. He has attracted a variety of prominent patrons, including Sir Michael Palin, and today welcomed Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews to Stromness Museum. He’s a real force of nature!

Letter from Scotland
As you sail into Stromness you cannot miss the stack of red rock that stands like an old man staggering on the edge of the island of Hoy ready to fall into the sea.  He is 137 metres tall and about 250 years old.  In recent years, men, women, girls and boys have had the temerity to climb him, beginning with Chris Bonington in 1966.  He climbed the Old Man again in 2014 to mark his 80th birthday.   I mention this because old age has been in the news this week with Andy Burnham talking of scrapping the triple lock on pensions to pay for social care in England and Wales.

MV Hamnavoe, the Stromness to Scrabster car ferry, was passing at the time on her normal run to Scrabster, having departed Stromness a few minutes earlier. The Hamnavoe crew put her launch in the water to stand by the casualty.

A game of secrets and lies. 'Bloody Orkney' is a fast-paced thriller set in Scotland, mainly in Orkney, during WW2. Stromness has changed since 1942 but would still be recognisable to the book's characters.

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... Western Sandpiper was new to #Orkney and remains the sole record of this Nearctic peep. The Spotted Sandpiper is only the second of three county records. Three Citrine Wagtails and four Olive-backed Pipits are a standout run of records. #rarebirds
