Neuroscientists are incredible and insane (in a great way). Is this really single cell resolution?

This stuff is amazing. I cant wrap my head around this, I'll stick to molbio and structbio

I’ve been really excited by conferences that aim to combine techniques across scales, as I think it’s what’s current and future for #structbio. If you get excited by the same, here is an upcoming structural biology/computation/imaging conference at Keystone 👇🏾

I failed! I got an offer to stay in academics that sounds a lot more supportive. Also, found a day care that is more reliable and somehow doesn't cost my entire salary (but does prevent me from getting my #subaru, rn)

...assess the strength of presented data based on analysis of the figures. E.g. if I was a reviewer for this paper, I would look at this fig and dismiss the paper out of hand, because the maps are nonsense. This is an extreme example, but similar principles apply to analysis of most #structbio data.

When I arrived to NYC as a postdoc, NYSBDG was my first local meeting, and I was blown way by the world-class quality of the science.

It's a great opportunity to meet the local #structbio & #cryoem community, and it's coming up in two weeks, so register now at the eventbrite link below!

The free and open and INGENIOUS format (which dates back to the 70’s) of the PDB file and associated analysis code for #structbio is completely under appreciated. PDB predates Genbank by a decade! People dedicated their working lives to overnight shifts at the synchrotron to collect these data.
His Nobel should have gone to the people who built the PDB.

Finally put together a script that scrapes arxiv/biorxiv/pubmed and emails the relevant structbio/ml papers from there every morning github.com/delalamo/Pub... I have it running on Heroku cloud for $7/mo, but it can also run locally for free on a raspberry pi or whatever

Using Federal funding, we described for the first time, the architecture of the Pentameric subunits of the HIV capsid and how they differ in binding to the rest of the capsid which is important for nuclear entry and drug binding, and we show this structurally. #structbio #FundScience

Friendly reminder, a model does not have a resolution; a map has a resolution. A model has spatial variance, rotamers, populations, etc. The map has resolution(s), threshold, density falloff, any number of correlation coefficients, etc.
Please, do not assign a resolution to your model.

And we're live! This was actually the first project I started in my PhD, a little over 3 years ago when I joined the Pornillos lab for #HIV #StructBio in February of 2021. Shifted focus to a more high profile project, but methods were developed specifically because this mutant was so weird! #cryoEM
Arg18 Substitutions Reveal the Capacity of the HIV-1 Capsid Protein for Non-Fullerene Assembly
In the fullerene cone HIV-1 capsid, the central channels of the hexameric and pentameric capsomers each contain a ring of arginine (Arg18) residues that perform essential roles in capsid assembly and ...

A well written introduction to Mixture-of-experts from last summer. This technique ensembles multiple ML models with distinct "specialties". As far as I know if has not yet popped up in the structbio/ml subfield, please correct if wrong
