Nat Turner was a terrorist.

At least, that's what they'd expect the Black community to call him if it were today.

He was born October 2, 1800....or 236 years ago today. And somehow they expected a man born enslaved to never want to rebel.

To escape.

To take revenge.

One reason I chose Styron is because Styron's Nat Turner appeals to Ezekiel. And tbf, there is a genuine challenge here to religious people who set out to interpret religious texts. But e.g. the rabbis (and the letter to the Hebrews) already see the issues raised by Gen 22.

William Styron - “Aushwitze itself remains explicable. The most profound statement yet made upon Aushwitz was not a statement at all, but a response.
The query, 'At Aushwitze, tell me, where was God?'
And the answer: 'Where was man? #QuoteBot

Hi, #booksky! I came off a nap musing about writers popular in the 1960s-80s, and whether they still get read. Names:

Muriel Spark, John Barth, and John Gardner. Are they forgotten now?

Kurt Vonnegut, John Updike, Philip Roth, William Styron.

Yours?

This is something I'm reading again. A first person account of Styron's descent into a depressive breakdown.

Interesting. Reading the list of contents, I found myself noticing the several of those works that I saw on the shelves of used book stores in my youth, frequently enough to provide a sense of familiarity, the way I see William Styron, Leon Uris, James Michener and John Updike now.
