This is one of the masterpieces representing the scroll of battle records, which tells the military story of the Heiji Disturbance (1159) as its subject. The scene depicted in this scroll is the encounter between Emperor Sutoku and Emperor Go-Shirakawa at the Six Waves Palace, as the former attempts to escape the confines of his secluded quarters. During the late Heian period in the first year of the Heiji era (1159), the power struggle between the Minamoto and Taira families led to the military conflict between Minamoto no Yorimori and Taira no Nobuyori, which came to be known as the Heiji Disturbance.

The empress was buried beneath the Sanmai-dō (三昧堂) of Hōkongō-in. This site is now the 'Hanazono-no-Nishi-no-Misasagi' mausoleum (花園西陵), north of the current temple on Mt. Goi (五位山).

Taikenmon'in was the mother of emperors Sutoku (崇徳天皇) and Go-Shirakawa (後白河天皇).

Benzaiten (弁才天) is the goddess of 'everything that flows': water, time, speech, music and knowledge.
Rokuharamitsu-ji's Benten-dō (六波羅蜜寺/弁天堂) was created after Emperor Sutoku (崇徳天皇 1119-64) dreamt the goddess promised to cleanse the world for him.

I had this Japanese poem (#77 from the Hundred Poets) in my mind when I wrote the message. The image of swift waters parting and joining again was written about lovers, but I feel it equally applies to old friends, and even old hobbies. It’s alright to have time apart and meet again down-stream. 💙

In 1156, following the Hōgen Rebellion (保元の乱), the ex-emperor was exiled to Sanuki (he would later become a Tengu, and 1 of Japan's 3 most feared yōkai 日本三大悪妖怪).
In the anti-Buddhist climate of 1868 the statue was moved to Rokuharamitsu-ji to save it.
