I like the theory that Succot was originally the Big Holiday that everyone celebrated. Rosh Hashanah was just the day to announce that it was coming up, and Yom Kippur was a day, mostly for the Priests, to get spiritually ready for serving the people on Succot.

It explains some of the oddities. Why is there so much more sacrifices for Succot than other holidays? Why is Rosh Hashanah a day of "remembering"? Why is the the 3 confessions on Yom Kippur 1. High Priest + family, 2. Other priests, and 3. all Israel?

Me: (having done Jewish Studies for 30 years and being exposed to Wissenschaft des Judentums, Modern Hebrew and Ashkenazi sources) It's almost Succot! Sukkus is one of my favorite holidays! I love to shake the lulav during the Feast of Tabernacles! Hooray, Sukkoth!

I bought some cool scarfs last fall when I realized we didn't have interesting succot decorations, but they arrived after the holiday. I am looking forward to seeing them pinned up this year.

He was always going to leave Thursday to be back in Israel in time for the start of Succot Friday evening. He’s cutting the earlier leg in Texas, and IMO that’s as much about domestic politics as anything.
