She misunderstands Sumption's point here. Cavendish wants immigrants to make more of a fiscal contribution. Sumption is saying that denying settlement - and making them stay on visas that do not allow them to change jobs and earn more - will reduce their contribution.

Restore Trust ran considerably better candidates after 2022, ditching overtly homophobic Stephen Green, and running Jonathan Sumption, Andrew Gimson on more centre-right message. But kept losing largely by being (fairly) perceived to be a primarily political campaign against 'politicisation'

If Sumption is on the right side, you really should re-examine your thinking.

I think we all know what she means when she talks about the composition of migrants.

How would you describe Restore Britain's platform except essentially what Sumption outlines above?

Agreed about Sumption.

And about judges.

My point was really about a written constitution not being a panacea for all our woes. If it can be created, then it can be broken.

Ultimately it comes down to a country's ability to enforce it.

Second, Lord (Jonathan) Sumption made the case against.

He highlighted the inflexibility of a codified constitution and said that it would 'greatly increase the political role of the courts'.

Should the UK adopt a codified or written constitution? The case against
Next week, the House of Lords will debate introducing a written constitution. This is also something that the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, discussed over the summer. Lord (Jonathan) Sumption makes the case against the UK adopting a written, or codified, constitution. The first post in this series, making the case in favour of a codified or written constitution, was published yesterday.

In Zadvydas, SCOTUS announced a rule intended to prevent years of civil detention, potentially indefinite. After 6 mos. of detention, a habeas petitioner can shift the burden onto the gov't to require a showing that there's a "significant likelihood of removal in the reasonably foreseeable future"

I have been critical of Sumption (a brilliant man) recently as I have left he was losing the plot in his old age. But he is right here.

Full disclosure: I briefed Sumption many years ago and was genuinely overwhelmed by his intellect.
Lord Sumption at The Spectator free speech debate, arguing against a motion 'This house believes Britain no longer has free speech'.

Here he explains why the buffer zones around abortion clinics are acceptable and why the restriction on 'silent prayer' is an incorrect characterisation of the law.

Should the UK adopt a codified or written constitution? The case against

Ahead of a House of Lords debate next week, and following comments by Andy Burnham in August, Lord (Jonathan) Sumption makes the case against a codified constitution. We have also published a case in favour.
