⚛️ Superconductors' true current limit

In niobium nitride hit with picosecond pulses, the electron pairs behind superconductivity broke apart at about 2.2 times the usual current limit. That could help magnet design.

Probing picosecond depairing currents in type-II superconductors - Nature Physics
Vortex motion and heating prevent direct-current measurements from reaching the intrinsic depairing limit of type-II superconductors. Picosecond pulses bypass these effects and reveal a sharp threshol...

The problematic part of colonization was the enslavement and genocides. It wasn’t the exploration and planting of flag. If we discover that there are sentient moon people with a rich culture and full emotional lives and also their blood can make room temp superconductors, maybe. Until then, no.

where are the room temperature superconductors?
So is the superintelligent AI's plan to kill all the humans and _then_ figure out how to automate mining rare earth metals and construct EUV lithography machines so it can print new chips without humans in the loop? To like... continue existing?

Wow yeah that sounds really smart I'm so scared

Now this is good timing. Helium ain't cheap, and until someone invents better superconductors, we really need it for some exotic-but-important applications. . .

we've always had room temperature superconductors. the real problem was just getting your room cold enough

i don't get why biology is the domain Anthropic seems fixated on. materials science and fusion power both seem much "safer" and achieving room temp superconductors or fusion power would be tremendous breakthroughs. i think it's literal fear of death from the founders.

This is great news! But let’s use the time it buys us to develop better high-temperature superconductors. 🧪
