Today's Zealandia trip, some great tieke and toutouwai content (not unusual), and some gulls; I think juvenile black backed gulls?

Good Zealandia lunch. Lots of tīeke around. Had a bit of fun with a woodblock filter on the one collecting nesting material.

Heard a flapping noise off the trail. It’s a tīeke (NZ Saddleback) taking a bath in the stream! First time seeing a tīeke outside of an aviary! #birds #AoNZ #Zealandia

Tīeke: The Saddleback belongs to New Zealand's unique wattlebird family, an ancient group which includes the endangered kōkako and the extinct huia.

Tieke have been re-released into Orokonui.
This press release is lovely and I just wish Ian Jamieson was still alive to see this. I suspect he would have been quietly delighted.

No Zealandia trips for a few weeks due to a combo of weather & weekend work & social obligations, but did get round to processing some more stuff; think this is the most obliging pair of tieke I've ever come across.

Some very photogenic nectar-eaters at either end of my walk this morning. Stoked to get the tieke with wings spread in the first shot; don't think I've ever really seen that before, let alone got a decent shot of it.
