Segments are normal sized, so is overall segment number and axis length (when tailbud is amputated).
I do think this is an eel-specific feature since the distribution of NMPs is quite unique and the pools are utilized differently over somitogensis.

In eels we do not find evidence of regeneration at any stage if the whole PSM is amputated but they are able to continue segmenting after tailbud amputation (likely using their rostral NMPs)

Just a methodological question when you amputate the tailbud you mean the whole unsegmented PSM until the last formed somite correct ?

In every vertebrate studied to date, neuromesodermal progenitors (NMPs) — the bipotent stem cells that sustain axis segmentation — exist as a single tailbud pool.
In eels, we discover TWO spatially distinct NMP pools.
Microsurgical amputations show eels segment even without a tailbud !
