Exactly! How many tanneries does the average Ork village posses?! 😀
Hey, pstt, you painting miniatures:

The only person you need to please is yourself.

If it doesn't please you to paint each belt pouch a different shade of leather, don't.

By and large American tanneries are super allergic to color but Wickett & Craig does do some good ones in its bridle leather.

intestinal fortitude, mostly. Historically tanneries (which also used a lot of urine) smelled so awful that they had to be built well away from settlements, and tanners were often persons of let's say ill repute because of the stench they carried.

While I manufacture my artisan handbags in the US all my leather, hardware, and thread comes from outside the country. We have no more tanneries or hardware manufacturing. Thread manufacturers left with the clothing industry. Soooo we will see if we can survive. I call my reps everyday

Meanwood Beck - much used to power mills and provide water for tanneries (+ act as drain) for centuries.

And if you check the "sources" of the leather, they'll report Italy or France where the tanneries are as opposed to where it actually came from.
Important point to add to this discussion about “luxury goods.”

Not only should we talking about where they’re made, and by who, but also where are the raw materials to make them are sourced, namely Africa.

did you know that hides from australian beef cattle just get chucked in a pit to rot? we don’t send them to tanneries anymore. they import hides from overseas and treat it and call it australian leather.

what a waste. farmers should be able to sell them off. they should be used! i hate it!

I'm just sayin', the Botanists' Guild and the Leatherworkers' Guild are both in Gridania and the practice of enfleurage (fat-based extraction of essential oils from flowers) has ties to a region of France known for tanneries...
It does also make me wonder if something like enfleurage has been developed, and if it has Gridanian origins. (see also: the real-world origins of the technique) 🤔

The Twilight Turns wallet is also Wickett & Craig bridle leather (the black parts) and then the pockets are Alran goat leather. Alran is a French tannery that does an amazing selection of colors, US tanneries are allergic to color.

There’s a reason tanneries were historically an “outside the city walls” kind of operation. Oof.

I seem to recall a Native American method that involved using the anima’s brains in the process. Tanning leather is not only messy and time consuming, but it stinks. Which is why most tanneries were located outside city limits.

El 19 d'agost del 1944 la jove partisana d 19 anys Simone Segouin era fotografiada a l'inici d l'alliberament de París.
Començava el desembarcament de Normandia i la resistència parisenca prenia els carrers, el 25/08 París era lliure.
