Often think about how Tarana Burke is now absent from most popular remembrances and understandings around the #metoo movement

Tarana Burke changed the world by turning #MeToo into a global movement for healing and justice. A tireless advocate for survivors, her vision reminds us that empathy is our greatest tool for systemic change. ✊🏾✨

The "Me Too" movement was started by civil rights activist and survivor Tarana Burke in 2006.

MeToo was never about court cases. The framework of MeToo created by Tarana Burke has always been about supporting survivors.

Just because 8.5x11s want to center perpetrators doesn’t erase what the actual work is about.
I want to (kindly) push back on this. The rollback of MeToo is not a “useless” court case. This is a highly coordinated— and so far successful— effort to dismantle women’s rights. That should concern you! Misogyny/women losing rights isn’t “noise” it’s foundational to fascism

Virginia Giuffre, Gisèle Pelicot, and Tarana Burke should get the Nobel Peace Prize.
Epstein network survivor Virginia Giuffre recognized as one of the “women who changed history.”

Tarana Burke is the founder of the #metoo movement, which encouraged women to speak out about their experiences with abuse. Another great black woman. Today and every day, I celebrate her. She made a huge difference in my life.

This is really inspiring. I did not know how the #MeToo movement went viral in 2017.

Mountains can be moved when women band together to form a collective voice.

147 lawmakers were held accountable.

It started with Tarana Burke.

"Misogynoir"

Jane’s current favorite workout? Leaps of faith.

Jane joined Alicia Menendez, Krista Tippett, and Tarana Burke at CareFest 2025 in NYC and her message was clear: f*ck being afraid.

You’ll notice that all of the major events of “Woke 1” are either catalyzed or organized around by Black people (MeToo was appropriated from Tarana Burke), almost as if social justice movements in our political environment are intertwined with Black activism 🤔
It’s annoying for “Woke 1” to be categorized as 2020-2024 when it was more accurately 2008-2021, with the election of Obama, the arrest of HL Gates, the murder of Trayvon Martin, the desecration of Michael Brown, the rise of MeToo and the martyrdom of George Floyd being major inflection points
I just cannot stop thinking about how 2020 had the largest mass protests in US history and the first electorate in half a century where more voters picked a candidate than sat out. I feel like these two facts are deeply connected.

Find the joy!

“Joy is an act of resistance,” and so we will lean in to that joy, knowing that our humanity demands that we fully partake of this magical experience.”
