Congratulations to Sabeen Kazmi & colleagues on their new study showing that gut microbes & microbial metabolites can promote tau aggregation in a mouse model of tauopathy/Alzheimer’s disease. The work identifies microbiome changes linked to tau risk over time as potential therapeutic targets.

So proud to share my first first-author paper from my postdoc in @liganlab.bsky.social out yesterday in
@cp-immunity.bsky.social! We characterized a model of the APOE3 Christchurch mutation on a tauopathy background and found downregulation of cGAS-STING-IFN pathway as a source of protection!
🚨Our new paper is out!🚨 We uncover a protective mechanism of the rare APOE3 Christchurch (R136S) mutation against tauopathy—by suppressing microglial cGAS–STING–interferon (IFN) pathway, a key inflammatory axis triggered by tau. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We combined 3R/4R #Tau expression with two synergistic Tauopathy mutations, P301L and S320F, that promote both nucleation and elongation of Tau fibrils. Neither 4R expression nor the mutations alone induced pathology. Only the combination triggered robust #Tauopathy. 4/10
