we were looking at a nesting colony; as do many herons, BBHE gather to nest and raise their young. Those large eyes and sensitive bill help these #birds hunt aquatic prey in the dark. This species’ scientific name is a tautonym (both the genus and specific name are the same) Cochlearius cochlearius.

Regulus regulus, the Goldcrest. Its scientific name a tautonym, both genus and species the same because this bird is the "type" of the genus, it's the first and defining species. US viewers will perhaps recognise it as a kinglet and it is, indeed, a kinglet type species. #UKBirding
