CAKE and TCAF being back to back weekends this year is KILLING ME what do you mean I have to CHOOSE

I know TCAF is curated with "Do you have a new book?" being one of the things determining if you get in or not.

If I can get my act together this will be an incredibly stupid mini comic for next years TCAF!
I am excited for The Gilded Age to return for another season this weekend because it means @ohhhaeee.bsky.social and I will be doing live texting watches for the next couple of months

I know admins at TCAF but thanks :)

TCAF didn't want to be a show where people saw the same creators selling the same books year after year. They also found the creators with new books sell and a bunch of creators with new books creates a buying buzz among attendees which helps make the show profitable for creators. Indy creators

This year's TCAF I just walked around and gave what stickers I had to people I thought were cool, but I would kinda laugh if next year I had enough random bits and bobbles to walk around with more things to trade or gift?

I tried to word my post for US residents who would know about the complete lack of federal/state support.
Especially any of us who've attended TCAF and seen what the Canadian gov provides.
I dont think any states offer comic grants.
NY certainly doesnt!

Dammit, great episode and for me Eisman is another Mt. Rushmore guest. Love how he explains investing, not with charts or multiples, simply through narrative. Too bad a vacation caused me to have to watch over a week late. TCAF is doing the Lord’s work and it is greatly appreciated.

If you can get ahold of someone at TCAF, they've been running a "recommender grant" program specifically for comics, which is a set of smaller grants with shorter applications, under Ontario Arts Council administration since OAC has the infrastructure. www.torontocomics.com/post/grants-...
Grants for Comics Creators 2025 Edition!
TCAF is once again thrilled to work with the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) to provide grants to comic writers creating new pieces of work through the OAC Recommender Grants for Writers program. We are looking for works exploring the breadth and diversity of comics. Successful applicants should demonstrate a solid commitment to personal expression through whatever genres or a mix of genres they choose to explore in their works. We will also consider non-fiction prose projects that explore comics his

I finally drew the line at TCAF when My Friend Dahmer launched. I got a free table on the main floor. Travel, expenses, hotel I paid for. Here's the kicker. I wasn't selling MY stock! TCAF provided the copies of MFD & all the money was theirs!

I sold over 400 copies in 2 days! Cleaned out on Day 2.

I enjoyed this write-up lots; thanks for sharing. Hope you enjoy Soften the Blow as much as I did (it was also a surprise purchase for me at TCAF [speaking of TCAF, have you been to TCAF? you should go to TCAF]).
October 22, 2026 at 2:48 PM
The TCAF thing. 400 copies at $25 a pop is $10,000 in sales!

And almost all the expenses were mine.

Afterwards I guilted my publisher into paying half my hotel bill, which was at least something.

I like TCAF. Great show. Love Toronto. Hopefully, that's not still the system in place.

Relatable.

I do SDCC if my way is paid only, and I don't table there. I never do MoCCA/NYCC because I stopped recouping costs, never mind profiting, years ago. TCAF is now every other year for similar reasons.

If the publicity was worth it, I could take the hit, but for huge shows, it never is.
The rising costs detailed here apply mostly to mainstream cons. Indie cons are getting out of hand, too.

I only attend either if all my costs are paid. But I'm a prima donna, and I don't need con income. If I was still hitting the road trying to make a name, yeah it would tough.
Is Artist Alley even sustainable any more?
It's more expensive than ever to set up in artist alley or at a comics show - and here are some of the numbers

I would LOVE to visit TCAF to get the chance to hang out with you and the other Eric/k.

I heard Françoise tell that story at TCAF. She was called in to do a 9/11 cover almost immediately after it happened because they were about to go to press and they felt they needed a cover about it. She and art were both feeling frazzled as they had just got done running against the crowd to get to

its my birthday! Trying to break free from the bday hate cycle by getting posi. This year I:

1. went to the beach
2. went to TCAF
3. got a CRAZY tattoo
4. went to renfaire
5. started a dream journal
6. started learning offhand drawing
7. learned some people behaviors
8. bought a LOT of houseplants
October 22, 2026 at 3:06 PM
Come to TCAF and I will buy you lunch. (Surely this, and the scintillating conversation, justifies a flight to Toronto.)

I wish so badly we had something like MICE or TCAF or SPX in California. We had APE for years but since that closed, I don't know anything wonderful. Maybe Comcs Arts LA but I haven't been yet, so I don't know the scene.

All I know is that SDCC and Wondercon kind of suck for comics.
October 22, 2026 at 3:20 PM
i have not been to tcaf and yes i very much would like to go. did the digital marketplace a couple of times and got some real excellent stuff, a lot of international comics that would have been otherwise out of reach

SOFTEN THE BLOW was devastating. i knew bread as an abstract humorist?! not ready
October 22, 2026 at 2:59 PM
+1 to all of this.

Turning comic cons into pop culture merch flea markets hasnt been good for anyone who actually gives a shit about comics. I don't know why they bother to call them comic conventions anymore.

Cons like CAKE and TCAF have the right recipe. C2E2 and ECCC are not for me anymore.

We were very lucky to discover this comic at the 2026 TCAF (Toronto Comic Art Festival). @torontocomics.bsky.social

It’s been a source of inspiration ever since.

From superstar artist Keerthana Uthiramerur - keerthuthi.ca

We’ve got "Work to Do" here:

Oh, I love TCAF! I will try to remember.
October 18, 2026 at 9:00 PM
The only show in Toronto that I’m likely to do next year (if they’ll have me) is tcaf. But remind me in the spring and we’ll see what we can do.

I stopped going to TCAF b/c i felt ashamed to be there. Other cons I could go to while working booths or volunteering b/c at least that gave me something to do other than remind me of my failures.
