New evidence from ESA's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) indicates Mars is not quite the geologically dead planet that many think it is.

A Mars-velous decade: Celebrating ten years of TGO
Ten years after arriving at Mars, ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) has grown far beyond its original ambitions. From revealing the martian atmosphere to becoming a vital communications link with ...

Europe’s TGO orbiter picked up something odd in the Martian atmosphere: spikes of hydrogen chloride right over the fissures on Alba Mons.

Not in winter, when that gas usually shows up, but at the start of northern summer.

It doesn’t match the normal seasonal pattern.

There is hot news coming from Mars.

For the first time, orbital data is revealing signs of young volcanism. Mars might not be geologically dead, just sleeping.

Using data from the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, scientists have found potential evidence of volcanic activity on Mars
Volcanic gases were found to be released by fissures in the Martian surface, a process also found in volcanic regions on Earth

Interesting thread! I didn't know TGO had imaged Perseverance on the surface. The radiation findings are fascinating, too.
🔴 40 000+ Mars orbits
🌅 30 000+ sunrises and sunsets
📊 600+ gigabytes, more than all other Mars spacecraft combined

Meet the #ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, @esa.int's largest and most sophisticated martian explorer.

Radiation watcher ☢️

Astronauts on a return mission to Mars would be exposed to at least 60% of the recommended radiation dose limit.

Radiation measurements from TGO confirm the paradoxical finding that travelling during solar maximum is the best time to go.

TGO plays a critical role relaying information from rovers and landers on the martian surface back to Earth.

It supports NASA's current surface missions and will do the same for @esa.int's Rosalind Franklin rover when it lands in 2030.

Trace gases make up less than 1% of the martian atmosphere by volume, but they play a critical role in regulating the planet's climate and weather.

Our spacecraft was designed to be more sensitive to trace gases than any other mission.

Trace gas mapper 🗺️

👀 TGO can detect gases down to a few parts per trillion. In 2021, it detected hydrogen chloride on Mars for the very first time.

♻️ Tracking these gases tells us how air circulates and how the atmosphere interacts with the surface below.

TGO first saw hydrogen chloride in 2021, but that was global and seasonal, tied to the dusty season. The new part is the location: above the Alba Mons fissures. The test is persistence. If it is there outside the dust season, volcanic makes sense; if not, dust chemistry still fits.
