Heart stopping moment when I spotted what I thought might be a fabulous jewel. Anglo-Saxon? Would I find the words ‘ALFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN’ (Alfred ordered me made) inscribed in gold, encasing a glorious large garnet? Would I heck. Only a chuffing, thickly encrusted bicycle lamp… #ThamesMudlark
