Naked and shiv’ring in nature’s perfection; a midnight walk of barren complexion. Locked in an ideal pain cannot repeal. I cherish the middle, the optimist’s laugh but confetti ne’er lands in that path. Nothing to celebrate. All I see is hate. A dream broken by night. No sense of what could be right. And alone at last I see what’s past: the crimes the lines the worst of times. The vanity of “me, me me.” How manipulation came to be. Waging war without caring what for while my loud cries you did ignore. Why couldn’t I be someone worth fighting for? Why couldn’t you think I was more? When the cracks are so large we all fall through and keep on staring up at you, are they cracks after all or are they just fissures? Volcanoes ready to blow. If you think on it you might know.

The Confetti Curse Even though it was pouring, Mum said: "You’ve got to have confetti." She’d learnt her lesson about rice at the last wedding, when she nearly blinded my cousin’s new husband. Always environmentally conscious, she didn’t want the old kind: sturdy stuff that clogs drains and kills ducks. So we chose the rice paper kind, vibrant little horseshoes and bells in pink, yellow, and green. Biodegradable joy in a cardboard tube. She threw it high into the rain. But the confetti never landed. It melted. A rainbow of sticky pulp targeted the soggy bride, melding with her veil, hair, and dress, gluing together a disaster no one had ordered. Streaking across white satin like a protest banner against matrimony itself, turning coiffured hair into a clumpy sculpture of regret and ruined lacquer. I whisked Mum away to the pub function room, where the photographs were taken in the dry. The bride looked furious, confetti welded to her like badges of misfortune. Every picture a portrait of her annoyance, while my mother beamed at her achievement. Tradition upheld. Planet safe. Bride ruined.
