At last! The Pleiades (M45) - the 'Seven Sisters' - has finally reached an elevation this summer so I could get an hour on it before dawn this morning. I've photographed them many times but never captured the nebulocity until now. #astronomy #astrophotography @stormhour.com @photohour.bsky.social
The M45 star cluster, famously known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, is a prominent open star cluster located in the constellation Taurus. It contains the reflection nebulae NGC 1432. Thanks to my DWARF 3 scope, I was able to image it for an hour collecting over a hundred exposures.

The Pleiades aka Seven Sisters. I used my Apertura CarbonStar for this. It's been fun learning to use a newtonian as someone who started with refractors. Imaging session was Nov 2 in my backyard in Virginia. #astrophotography #thepleiades #space

The Pleiades and Uranus from Nov 22. A clean and labeled image. More in alt. #BlueTue #ColorADay #EastCoastKin #astrophotography #nightskyphotography #ThePleiades #Pleiades #Uranus #Planets #Taurus
The Pleiades on the left with Uranus on the right as a blue dot. Taken with a Nikon Z5 and a 150mm lens with 60 sec exposures tracked with MoveShootMove Nomad. Processed in PixInsight with 49 out of 62 frames used. This images labels various object using the plate solver script in PixInsight. It is easier to find Uranus here.

A quick heads-up that tomorrow there is a #LunarOccultation of #M45 #thePleiades visible from the UK. The #CrescentMoon shouldn't overpower the cluster too much. If you have binoculars it will look even better!

“Dance of Seven Sisters”

Upon the breast
of night they gleam.
Seven souls
from an ancient dream.
Daughter’s Atlas,
steadfast, strong.
And Pleione,
who sang their song.

Sunday = #Stunday! This image from July of 2020 left me stunned and laughing because it was just too much!
This #predawn scene is full of sky celebrities!
You've got #Venus, #ThePleiades, #ISS, #NoctilucentClouds, AND #CometNeowise! #blueskyartshow #photography #astrophotgraphy #📷 #🔭 #EastCoastKin
A predawn photo of the sky, but that's not all! Across the top of the image are many small stars set against a deep blue sky which gradually turns to a gradient of pale yellows and orange of sunrise colors at the horizon toward the bottom of the image. On the far right, and down from the top of the image is the small bright constellation of The Pleiades, and much lower down toward the brightening horizon is the brilliant planet Venus. From the center of the image, and just up to the left is a bright streak of light, slanted down from left to right. That is the trail of the International Space Station over a few seconds of exposure, as it quickly crosses the sky. Below that, closer to the changing colors along the horizon is a ghostly baby blue, twisting cloud that stretches from the left of the image to about the center along the horizon. These are rare clouds very, very high in the atmosphere called "Noctilucent Clouds". (I will post a link to a wiki article on them in the comments) Almost hidden in the advancing dawn colors and the Noctilucent Clouds is a dash of brightness steeply tilted from right, to left. That is the Comet Neowise (Also an article in the comments). Below the horizon are low, getnly rolling hills as far as the eye can see, in a dull gold color of grasses, lit by the light of the Moon (the moon is not in the image frame). Also, along the horizon, and the the far left, is a large grouping of small red lights in the distance. Those are a huge number of safety lights atop electrical wind turbines.

Got some half decent shots of Orion, Jupiter, & the Pleiades last night. Tried the gimbal to hold the phone steady but went back to handheld 10s exposure & then some post processing to enhance & remove the majority of the ambient light.

#ThePleiades are 440 light years away. Cultures separated by oceans and thousands of years still remember them as seven stars. The “Seven Sisters” are named:

Alcyone
Celaeno
Electra
Maia
Merope (the lost star)
Taygete
Sterope

In #GreekMythology, they are the daughters of Atlas and Pleione.

The constellation Pleiades, "The Seven Sisters", is named with the number "seven" in cultures spanning the globe

There have only been six visible to the naked eye for the past 100,000 years

The memory of a seventh star is a story older than history

A story that echoes in the ancient sky

Last minute addition to this morning observations by the Odyssey Pro - #m45 #thepleiades. #unistellar #odysseypro #space #astronomy #amateur
M45 The Pleiades - telescope processed image. The luminous blue reflection nebula surrounding the stars is not leftover birth material, but an unrelated interstellar dust cloud M45 is currently passing through. M45 The Pleiades - unprocessed image. Because it is so close to Earth (~444 light-years), measuring the precise distance to M45 has served as a vital benchmark for calibrating the cosmic distance ladder.

M45 The Pleiades - telescope processed image. M45 is the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, a bright open star cluster in Taurus. Its hot blue stars pass through an unrelated dust cloud, creating a blue reflection nebula. M45 The Pleiades - unprocessed image. Nicknamed the "Seven Sisters," this star cluster has been seen as a group of seven in myths across cultures, possibly humanity's oldest story.

Good Sunday afternoon. Have many images to share from last night. Starting out with the long exposure of #m45 - #thepleiades from the Dwarf Mini. #dwarflabs #dwarfmini #space #astronomy #amateur
M45 - The Pleiades - telescope processed image. While famous for the Seven Sisters, M45 is actually a massive nursery of over 1,000 stars. Most are too dim for the naked eye, but they all formed from the same cloud of gas. M45 - The Pleiades - unprocessed image. The cluster is moving together through the galaxy like a flock of birds! They travel at roughly 40 km/s, but in 250 million years, they will drift apart and go their separate ways.
