Fresh blog: STRATIFY trial for PE

Peripheral tPA infusion is EQUALLY EFFECTIVE as compared to ultrasound-assisted thrombolysis

Catheter-directed thrombolysis for PE is dead

We can get the same benefits with peripheral tPA infusions (w/o procedural costs & complications)... #1/2 #EMIMCC

Right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler underwent a successful thrombolysis procedure to remove a blood clot in his right upper extremity this morning by Dr. Paul DiMuzio at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Further treatment and a subsequent timeline of recovery for Wheeler is to be determined.

Ukraine received this tranche thanks to improvements in stroke treatment in hospitals, particularly the increased use of thrombolysis to dissolve blood clots.

Did you know that mechanical thrombectomy for stroke is 7 times more effective than thrombolysis for MI? It saves lives, reduces disability. Much of the UK still doesn’t have 24hrs access to thrombectomy and only 4% of stroke patients get one. #anaesthesia2025

Extremely relevant? WTF is "Thombolysis?"

Short version - "Thrombolysis, also known as thrombolytic therapy or fibrinolytic therapy, is a treatment that dissolves blood clots to restore normal blood flow."

I have colleagues who seen what you described (pre and post CtPA thrombolysis). Personally I had a case PE + DVT confirmed on scans. Post thrombolysis. DVT is gone. pe has residual.

Got it. But isn’t that thrombectomy, not thrombolysis? Or are the terms interchangeable?
Depends on the type and size of clot and where it’s lodged. Drugs can break up a clot, but if in an artery that leads to, say, the brain, you kinda don’t want pieces of the clot breaking off. Hence surgery to just yank it out.

It is frankly crazy to think how much modern medicine has changed even just in the last 50 years!
Thrombolysis to prevent the irreversible damage of a heart attack.
And
Use of inhaled steroids to prevent recurrence of asthma attacks both only widespread in the 1980s!
Do you ever just think about the fact penicillin is less than 100 years old?

A Czech trial of 558 people with dangerous lung clots found feeding clot dissolving drugs straight into the lung artery cut deaths and repeat clots to under 1%, against nearly 7% on blood thinners alone.
