They said thunderstorms for the Eurobodalla Shire on the NSW South Coast. I was wandering 1080 Beach and saw the build up. The result was seven drops of rain.

Re: Florida Learjet crash, on the ATC tapes the pilot says she's encountering precipitation at 35k feet with a temp of -47˚C, which is just a crazy, edge-of-the-envelope scenario. Normally it's too cold for precip at those temps, except in the updraft cores of powerful thunderstorms.

I should add that thunderstorms contain many extreme hazards, not just severe icing. Investigators will also be looking at whether extreme turbulence or wind shear damaged the plane or caused the pilots to lose control, for example. The ice comments are intriguing but preliminary.
