I remember being taught "persuasive writing" as part of the secondary school curriculum, and it was basically a ticklist of rhetorical devices, I suspect that's still floating around. So I'd not blame the students, I'd have to quiz them a lot on what they actually meant and then do The Talk.

She considered herself a mental health expert which to be fair is a bulk of the work (I wonder whyyyy...) and if you had needs that fitted into her "ticklist of adjustments" my union said she could be quite helpful.
If you were outside her box like me & blind colleague she was worse than pointless.

You can't make the job advert too tightly defined either, because academics are all different and before they apply you have very little idea the mix of candidates you will get. And all will likely satisfy HR's "essential skills" ticklist and prob also "desirables", but some more so than others.

At #Glasgow2024 there was an author selling her books in the dealers hall which had a ticklist of three things, one of which was 'dumbass lesbians', and then a cross against 'well-balanced main character who made good decisions'. She had sold out. Anyone remember author or book?
