This is because music is one of the most obvious things where it's *all* a tower of abstractions, it stretches from the most concrete "your left pinky does this at this time" all the way up to extremely abstract wacky music theory stuff like Tonnetz

Claude and I made a Tonnetz visualization of the Shostakovich Fugue in A major: jtauber.github.io/shostakovich...

Illustrates the chromatic mediants really well.

Noodled around with a web-based Tonnetz keyboard, and it's cool to see visual representations of how chords and intervals *feel*.

Thinking about a pad-based MIDI device that mapped key positions to these relationships and intervals...

And now, for something completely different
Tonnetz — The Lattice of Triads
A triangular lattice of pitch classes where every triangle is a chord — major triads point up, minor triads point down. Click to sound, and trace the Neo-Riemannian P/L/R transforms.

Just discovered Leonhard Euler's "Tonnetz".

My inability to memorize algebraic processes held me back in math, until geometry/vector math made it click. Same, for visual scripting and shader programming.

Music theory never clicked for me before, but thinking of it *spatially* changes everything.

I just graphed some crap on the Tonnetz out of my own free will it's TIME FOR BED

The entire grid is known as a “Tonnetz”, as explained in Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonnetz — except that unfortunately my convention (and JCB's) is up-down-symmetric wrt the one used in the Wikipedia illustration. 🤷 •8/19

Oh hell I have discovered Tonnetz and I am about to go down an even crazier Music Theory rabbit hole than my time with Non-Functional Harmony in Jazz

Awesome tool for it though, time for some AutDHD hyperfixation to widen my skillset!

Pythogoras meets the Circle of Fifths? When systematized in a 12×12 PC×Key schema, it forms a tonnetz. Implications? No idea.

Tonnetz Theory, Classical Harmony, and the Combinatorial Geometry of Abstract Musical Resources
In a previous submission, we established a fundamental relation between tone networks and configurations. It was shown that the Eulerian tonnetz can be represented by a $\{12_3\}$ of Daublebsky von St...

That’s fun. Reminds me a bit of the spiral array tonnetz in music theory although I would have to think harder to say something sensical about that

Throw in Riemann’s tonnetz for fun once they get counterpoint.
