That’s called a glottis, entrance to the trachea. The same structure you’re thinking about in snake mouths, it’s also visible in birds and other reptiles

It’s actually way more safe this way! These guys are swallowing whole prey animals without teeth to grind or shear smaller pieces, and if the trachea entrance was further back like in most mammals, they would run the risk of blocking it & choking. The glottis puts the air hole in front of the danger
