#Romans at #Trimontium worked hard—but they played too! Gaming pieces, possible board fragments, dice & even a ceramic toy horse have been found at Trimontium - a glimpse into leisure & childhood on Rome's northern frontier.

After the excitement of yesterday’s #CarnyxFrenzy let’s relax a little for #RomanFortThursday with this view of the Trimontium monument & gorgeous Eildon Hill. Manned during an intermittently bloody period of the conquest, the men stationed here would doubtless have heard carnyces sounded in anger.

A striking #Roman cavalry helmet & mask, 1st C - Philippopolis (Plovdiv, Bulgaria). Found in a tomb, it may have belonged to a #Thracian auxiliary. Once thought purely ceremonial, helmets like this may have also seen battle. Philippopolis was known as Trimontium—like our own #Trimontium in Scotland.

The #Trimontium Stone:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Here once stood the #Fort of Trimontium built by the troops of #Agricola in the first Century AD abandoned at least twice by the #Romans and ultimately lost by them after fully one hundred years of frontier warfare"⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Erected & unveiled in 1928.

This fragment of #gaming board & counters were found at the #Trimontium fort site. Probably used by #Roman soldiers to play Latrunculi or Ludus Latrunculorum, the counters are made of recycled Samian ware & glass.

The 1st excavations at the #Roman fort of #Trimontium by James Curle began in February 1905 (120 years ago this month!) and were completed in 1910. In his own words, he did not realise 'how large an undertaking lay before me' - to mark this anniversary - Objects and images from Trimontium.

All along the watchtower.
A 360 view from the site of the Roman signal station & watchtower on Eildon Hill North, Melrose.
The combined slog up here from Trimontium below, & the strength of the wind at the top, probably accounted for a lot of bribery in writing the duty rosters.

🐾 #LoveYourPetDay
Romans loved their pets —dogs, cats, & birds were cherished companions. At #Trimontium, a roof tile bears the pawprint of a wandering dog 🐕 over 1,900 years ago. Pets appear on children's tombstones, & some memorials were just for animals.

#Trimontium is dog friendly!🧡

And now, live from Scotland for #HillfortsWednesday, the dominating, brooding presence of Eildon Hill North from the fort site of Trimontium - the two other Eildons are behind it, giving Tri-Montium (Three Hills) its name.

For today's #Melrose Rideout: Did you know that #Trimontium was an auxiliary #cavalry fort? Evidence of horses abounds in the form of horse harness remnants, skeletons & cavalry helmets.

Long ago these peaceful fields echoed with the sounds of a bustling Roman fort, densely packed with buildings & sites of intense activity.
