TIL tsunamigenic landslides
Sit down & think about this for a few minutes. This is wild: its the global sound of climate change.

'A large rockslide occurred in Greenland in 2023 that generated a local tsunami. It was energetic enough to generate a global signal that resonated for 9 days'.

A rockslide-generated tsunami in a Greenland fjord rang Earth for 9 days
Climate change is increasingly predisposing polar regions to large landslides. Tsunamigenic landslides have occurred recently in Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), but none have been reported from the east...

...it concluded since the landslide was triggered by the melting glacier, and since *that* happened due to rising global temperatures...

This was a signal - and a warning - from our rapidly changing world, heard in every single part of it.

Best we listen up.

Enroute to do some multibeam mapping of a very large, possible tsunamigenic landslide in BC and am reminded how drop dead gorgeous southern Alberta is😍🧪⚒️

It look a few days to get decent satellite imagery to confirm the landslide and location. Meanwhile, @davepetley.bsky.social wrote a short blog post with initial hypotheses eos.org/thelandslide...

Tsunamigenic rockslide on your desktop?

This is a scaled and simplified model of the 2017 Karrat landslide.

I think it captures the dynamics of the tsunami generation quite well, though it is of course, very simplified.

Moment tensor now changed to strike-slip, meaning most likely NOT tsunamigenic.

In fact, a "megatsunami" event occurred just 2 yrs ago, in 2023, when a massive rockslide caused a ~650 foot wave in a Greenland fjord. The resulting oscillation literally "rang the Earth" like a bell for 9 days! (The paper describing this is remarkable):

Some regions off Vancouver Island and Grays Harbor WA do show signs of a potentially-active megasplay fault. These locations are more likely to see slip and tsunamigenic displacement from this feature. 3/4

A new investigation (Karstens et al. 2023) has shown that a landslide triggered the 1650 tsunamigenic eruption of Kolumbo in the Aegean Sea.

⚒️ 🧪 A swarm of earthquakes has been rattling western Mindanao, the Philippines' 2nd-largest island. Some areas have been preemptively evacuated. The fault system here has a record of damaging, tsunamigenic earthquakes, and this swarm is unusual. So, what’s going on, and what can we say about hazard?

🌊Extremely interesting sediment samples received from the Japan Trench. They were collected during the #IODP3 Expedition 503 "Hadal Trench Tsunamigenic Slip History - Buried in Trench".

🧪We continue our research into bioturbation and trace fossils in the hadal zone!

A giant tsunamigenic rock avalanche (1 km²) that traveled ~16 km (partly onto ice) has just been dated to 10.9 ka in south Greenland! 😲
Impressive case and paper! 👏

Contemporary to the one we just dated in Ecrins massif! ⏱️

Such events are expected to be more frequent due to climate change! 🔥

Just because Poseidon has dominion over the waves doesn’t mean Elysium’s coasts are free from tsunami risk. Volcanoes, underwater landslides, and meteorite strikes can all be tsunamigenic!
If you see the tides retreat, run for high ground!!

Yeah, and if 8.8 sticks, that's in the range were a tsunamigenic aftershock isn't out of the question.

We do. Buoy stuff is incorporated and so is onshore seismic data and (where it exists) offshore seismic data. Seismic is important for the immediate area of tsunamigenic earthquake as seismic waves travel extremely fast (~6-8 km/s for P-waves and 3-4.5 km/s for S-waves) compared to tsunami waves.

This long-lasting, globally observable seiche is only the second time such a signal has been observed, after the Dickson Fjord event in 2023, described in this study by @ksvenenvig.bsky.social and others www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Shallow means nearer to the surface, therefore more surface effects. A magnitude 8.2 deep in the mantle (say 600km) would be much less damaging or tsunamigenic than 8.2 only 12km deep.
July 30, 2025 at 3:57 AM
One of the neat things was that the seiche (sloshing back and forth of water within the fjord) continued for over a day and we could record the seismic signal that was generated, using seismometers all around the world.
