This is a river redhorse, a bottom-feeding fish native to the Appalachians. I don’t know what possessed him to take a trout fly, but when he felt the hook he fought hard. He’s none the worse for wear, though. I released him back into the Tuckaseegee River. #fishing

At the far end of this bridge is the Cowee Tunnel, which appears in the movie The Fugitive. The rail line and tunnel were built by convict labor. Today I visited an archeological dig nearby, led by a UNC archeology grad student.
