A fine catalogue showing a wide range of a printer's standard range of vignettes and ornaments and issued by the Leipzig based typefoundry of J.G. Schelter & Giesecke. Undated it includes specimen adverts dated to 1898. The cover shows a maiden, flowers in her hair, presenting a wreath of laurel, to the bust of a printer against a wooded background. The Gothic style typeface titling sits below right and the name of the typefounders appears lower left. Many of the items are wonderfully 'arts and crafts' in style, along with examples of late Nineteeth-Century German romanticism that have a strong feel of what was to become known as Jugendstil. The company were both a typefoundry and a manufacture of printng presses that dated back to 1819. Based in the important printing city of Leipzig the company was nationalised by the new East German state in 1946.

An early outing in Gebrauschgraphik for Jakob Erbar's "Erbar-Grotesk" typeface of 1926. It is considered, along with Futura, one of the earliest commercial geometric "modern" san serif typefaces & was issued by Ludwig & Mayer's typefoundry. This supplement was designed, set and printed by Erbar's class at the Kölner Werkschulen (Cologne Academy of Fine and Applied Arts. The second page of the supplement. The capitals used for titling as paragraph headers are in larger type size and partially set on a red background. It ends with the title of Ludwig & Mayer, the typefoundry in Frankfurt am Main. Memphis’s bold style (halbfett) was the first part of the family that the D. Stempel AG typefoundry released. Designed by Stempel’s artistic director Rudolf Wolf, the debt that Memphis paid to Futura is clear when the letters are closely analyzed. For instance, the lowercase a is not only single-storied but the lowercase r is a ball-and-stick form, just like Paul Renner designed for Futura. The printing industry considered that several of Futura’s atypical shapes were too unorthodox, and the ball-and-stick r was quickly replaced. Stempel would soon offer a normal r for Memphis, too.
