Hi, my name is Lionel. I engrave typographic punches with hand tools. Punchcutting is the craft by which all printed letterforms in the western world were made from 1450 to 1840. Today there are less than 10 active punchcutters in the world. I’m the only trans one.

I'm not an expert, but perhaps they were already using pantographs in 17C? It just squeaks in past the invention of microscope optics… punchcutting truly is incredible.

Sad to leave Cambridge after a fab research week. It was a joy to be back at the UL w/ my mates, talking blacksmithing, stonecarving, punchcutting, bibliography, watermarks, jewelry, engraving, carriage design, photography, archaeometallurgy. Loved seeing colleagues from HPS & planning new things!
The early punchcutters looked to calligraphic hands as models for their hand engraved types. So I took a intense calligraphy class to inform my punchcutting practice. I
