From today's dive: here's the first-ever supermale Ring-tailed wrasse (Oxycheilinus unifasciatus) I've seen at Ulua beach. If you didn't know, wrasses all start out female, some go to a subadult male phase, then there's the breeding supermale. Might even be eggs behind him there! 📷🦑🐟
A supermale Ring-tailed wrasse (Oxycheilinus unifasciatus), his back patterned a striped purple and lavender, with an electric yellow stripe near the eye, bright orange pectoral fins, and green and red stripes on the lower jaw and head. There's the suggestion of a black spot on the tail. He's swimming over a sandy bottom with some rubble and sparse coral in the background. Ulua beach, about 5 meters deep.

But the wild thing is it’s not even that simple. There were affluent agricultural societies; I study one, the ancestral Lenca of the Ulua Valley in Honduras. People who employed forms of farming that weren’t maximizing surplus for profit could make great artworks like these

Close up on the head and front half of a Flying gurnard, a truly unusual fish that creeps across the sand bottom using specially modified fins. It has very large eyes that show refractive irridescence from my strobe, and is sort of polka-dotted in reds, browns and blues

A toothy critter cosplaying Betelgeuse for Halloween? :) This Yellowhead moray was...not thrilled I interrupted his evening hunt. This is something of a threat posture, the eel deepening its yellow head and grey stripes as a warning. One of the few species you want to be cautious around. :) 📷🌿🐟🦑
