#unityscript
I think people who remember unityscript might be kind of imagining that it's a similar thing (ie, just bad javascript), but gdscript really is its own thing and it's thoughtfully built for the purpose that it fulfills.

though i do wonder how good the c# support is now. UnityScript went the way of the dodo evenchually...

Another titbit of wisdom I wish I realised sooner - if you're going to make drastic changes to unity scripts to get a Wwise switch working more fluidly - make a project backup! #Wwise #unity #soundsesign #videogame #videogamesound #unityscript #wwiseSwitch

you know how back when unity had unityscript after anything past if/else you’d end up in the microsoft website learning c# instead? anyway shibari and sailing websites

aah right, catching up now - the reason this is topical to the thread is that I'm guessing UnityScript has syntax sugar to rewrite what the code is actually doing to the "expanded" version at the bottom of your tweet?

I mean this, which doesn't work in C# but did in UnityScript:
myTransform.position.y = 5;

Here position is a struct property and y is a variable of that struct. Have to do this, which is infuriating to me:

var pos = myTransform.position;
pos.y = 5;
myTransform.position = pos;

I think syntactic sugar has a more specific meaning in .NET than in many other languages. It’s features that can be implemented without changing the Common Language Runtime. I like them and have one specific in mind I wish would be added (it worked in UnityScript): Setting a struct prop variable.

I tried to use C-style class inheritance in UnityScript, across different objects.

It worked instantly.

This is called "headphones work" when porting a file from UnityScript to C#. Grind it out.

The problem with GDscript (and unityscript and any other domain specific script) is that the knowledge is non-transferable. You're locked into that platform. My personal problem with it is that it fucks up my python writing skills.

C#でUnityScript作成意外とできるもんだな…

This is even funnier when you consider that you could just call C# functions from UnityScript and vice versa.

Bonus fun fact: When porting to one platform, it was weeks away from having to upgrade to a version of Unity that didn’t support UnityScript.

Fun fact: ‘My Friend Pedro: Blood Bullets Bananas’ was written in UnityScript.

Bomb Dolls (2019) this is NOT a princess game this is a girlsoft game. but i did come up with the initial design of the 3 girls in a wasteland. @jessicagirlsoft.bsky.social expanded it into a full game with direction and concept art, i did the modeling and the unityscript code that somehow runs lol

I have a UnityScript book I bought about 6 months ago on Humblebundle. Is that still relevant?

UnityScript! And i gave up, faster to rebuild project from scratch.

bomb dolls has cars but those are essentially 2d and running on unityscript and the old input system and not even keyboard compatible... my dream is to have a real bonky 3d car with suspension that makes it feel squishy like a fortnite car... we'll get there someday 🚗

This seems to be due to the interop being designed to cope with GDScript's limitations (passing parameters around as dictionaries, etc).

But this doesn't make sense for something like C# or C++ extensions.

It feels like UnityScript all over again - I hope they focus on fixing this soon.

A lot of stuff in Unity feels silly in hindsight (remember UnityScript?). And a lot of features never came out properly. With Unreal (for 4 years now) I do not only see improvement everywhere, I also see the abandonment of features when the replacement is there and usually the replacement is better.
