Holy shit. USDTs are the real things that backs worlds financial system. This is not ideal.

So the only linker that seemingly does actually work for USDTs reliably is the good old GNU ld. Is the truth out in the world that USDTs on Linux are simply not used anywhere by anyone? Or does everyone actually link using ld?

We're big believers of USDTs at Polar Signals, and here is both a deep dive and a bit of detail on how we used them to build the NVIDIA CUDA Profiler we announced a few weeks ago!

I figured it out (I'm pretty sure). Mold linker was GC'ing an ELF header that SystemTap USDTs need for handling linker relocations. Tracing such an executable would then touch the wrong places, leading to corruption and !FUN!
Soo... I did a thing github.com/oxidecompute... and am now putting it into use in Nova #JavaScript engine and I find that there is some issues, like segfaults when using perf stat. Want to come look at me struggle with this memory safety violation in Rust? Hop on.

I'm losing hope for tracing on Linux: not only mold but also LLD and Gold will GC out the .stapsdt.base section out of executables if given half a chance. At least locally that makes executables not trigger USDTs and/or crash when traced. bpftrace just doesn't trigger, Linux perf crashes.

1. Tokio console? Of any use? Anything it could include that would make it more useful in this case?

2. Would having USDTs in tokio itself be useful? In addition to (or instead of) the tracing instrumentation (cfg flag choice). I’ve wanted try this, but i won’t have time for a while.

Or are prelink adjustments (which is what .stapsdt.base is there to detect) never done in Gold and LLD, allowing USDTs to work reliably even without the ability to detect them? Or does everyone use a trick to keep the .stapsdt.base from being GC'd, eg. ".reloc 0, R_X86_64_NONE, .stapsdt.base"?

The pics I was sent were $3500USDT. I don't know what USDTs are though. But yeah, that's the same kind of pics I got.

You can go watch my prez in dtrace.conf now! The good folks at @oxide.computer fixed up a failure I had with the slides, you won't even realise something was amiss. Unfortunately, my audio settings were apparently somehow shot so... Sorry about the crackly mic :D

I've finished the first draft of my slides and crammed them way too full of odd references.

Over all I think I've got a pretty good talk on my hands though, so hopefully I get to present on Magitech. Or was it on USDTs? I forget.

The only crypto I trust is stablecoins backed by an actual verifiable asset. None of 99% of the bullshit people plonk on Solana net. Give me USDTs, give me USDCs, give me actual backed coins where buying more supply means someone has to put most of that money paid back into actual assets of value.

I'm feeling pretty proud of myself: last November/December I figured out how USDTs work in Linux and implemented it in @oxide.computer's excellent usdt crate, but I lost focus before making all the tests pass as they relied on dtrace.

But last night I figured out bpftrace to make the tests pass!

$800 million for skirt sanctions using USDT on Russian-linked Crypto Wallet Channel Tether
A network of crypto wallets associated with entities related to Russian states helped move more than $8 billion in digital assets to avoid Western sanctions, according to a September 26 report by blockchain analytics firm Elliptic. The findings reveal that licensed Russian companies, drawn from a pack of recently leaked data, rely primarily on tether USDTs to maintain cross-border trade.

Wrote some code. Feels good. DTrace USDTs. Where is my complete and robust DTrace implementation on Linux? Enough already, this is just sad.
