I did not know Monark sold only 150,000 worldwide. I hope that’s ok. I’m sure Varlet is going to be a lot less (especially here in the west considering it never got a physical release and it didn’t make a splash at all)

A final point. It’s been interesting to see various Japanese developers name drop Gunparade in interviews in the past few years, certainly a testament to its influence. In any case, I hope to keep writing about the history of Gunparade and its extended world. There's a lot to cover.

"I think when people first see the game's key images - well, the obvious comparison is Persona, right? I think it's fair to say that a lot, maybe not all, games developed in Japan are being inspired by Persona in one way or another these days. At least in some form." While it's not surprising to hear, we were taken aback by how earnest the team is about their inspirations. Of course, by taking more than a cursory glance at Varlet it's clear that while Persona was clearly an inspiration, it's far more than a carbon copy, and has other inspirations elsewhere. Your actions supposedly will impact your progression via what the team is calling the Triad System. Obviously we were unable to dissect how it works in practice during our short, 45 minute demo. What we could begin to grasp was the battle system. Behind the Manga: Growing up, were there any developers, creators, or video games that inspired you to pursue a career in the games industry? Satoshi Hirayae: I've been inspired by many games over the years, but Gunparade March (a tactical RPG developed by Alfa System that was only released in Japan) had a profound impact on me. The players will need to play ‘Elemental Gearbolt’ , ‘Shikigami no Shiro’ and other Alfa System games that may not be available in the West, such as ‘Gunparade March’ and ‘Kenran Butokai’. There are also novels and comics to explore that are related to the games. This gigantic universe is connected by characters and hinted in stories and information throughout. Not all questions are answered, and there is no end to the ‘large lore’. It’s likely that ‘Tagami’ from Elemental Gearbolt and ‘???’ in ‘Shikigami no Shiro’ are the same character, and he moves between the worlds (or co-exist in multiple worlds). We also know that he uses ‘holy gun’ as his weapon. In the ‘Elemental Gearbolt’, he supplies ‘holy gun’ to the players, and in ‘Shikigami no Shiro’, he uses his weapon in his fight with the enemy. He appears in other titles too, and he might appear in other games in the future.
