Well the Republic is distinct from the Empire. The Republic predated Visigoths, Christ, and formal control of Judea. It fell largely due to competing factions of oligarchs carving up public lands/resources for themselves until the people settled for autocracy instead of constant violence.

Realistically the Visigoths, the Jews, Christians and other groups undermined the republic and it fell from over taxation without representation and too many groups gaining political power within the empire.

Not my most perfect recitation of the Lord's Prayer in Gothic from memory, but the one with the best backdrop. From a video on Youtube where I introduce the language of the Goths (as in Ostrogoths or Visigoths), the oldest language closely related to English for which we have long written records.

Marius, aka "the wise one" according to his own account: I have many valuable documents in this house, some irreplaceable. What's that? the Visigoths are invading? I'd better leave my house and walk around... omg they set my house on fire. who could have foreseen this? all the documents, lost!

Speaking as an outsider here (I’m a modern historian), but–coming from a big-picture European perspective—is the issue that, if we take the early Merovingians and Visigoths as Late Antiquity (which seems uncontroversial now?), it’s then hard to come up with clear dividing line prior to the 8th c.?

Don't just blame it on the Vandals! They may be the usual suspects but Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Huns and Suebi were all seen in the vicinity!

Perhaps we may learn from recent human history by examining instances of social momentum in response to news of gold in California, Deadwood, or the Yukon. The context of a gold rush may be helpful. Or perhaps the context of the Hapsburgs. Or the Visigoths sacking Rome.

Visigoths: "hey, at least they're better than the romans, right?"
September 26, 2026 at 5:03 AM
There's many examples of that in history, but my favorite is when the visigoths got folded by the Ummayad caliphate because a lot of nobles switched sides through a "help us depose this asshole and we'll swear fealty to you" deal. It also ruins the 19th century "reconquista" revisionist narrative.

Who takes a vacation in Sparta these days?
Athens is still victorious.

Xi meant China is the rising power and the United States is Sparta destroyed later by the Visigoths.

The Thucydides trap is a relatively modern concept based around the historian Thucydides’s quote about the second Peloponnesian War (431 B.C. to 404 B.C.): “It was the rise of Athens and the fear that this instilled in Sparta that made war inevitable.”

And it's accurate, if you know English history, what with the Saxons, Danes, Visigoths, Gauls, Franks, and Romans. I am a white guy in America whose ancestry is largely Spanish, French, and English. I am a mongrel person. The truth is, we all are.
