What's even better is the depiction of Moses throughout medieval art as horned owing to a mistranslation in St Jerome's Latin Vulgate.

When I talk to my UG students about devils they think anyone with horns is a devil then I show them lots of Moses depictions.

St Jerome of Stridon, was a priest, confessor, theologian, and historian. Jerome was born at Stridon, a village near Emona on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia. His translation of the Bible was one of the finest and is known as the Latin Vulgate.

I mean if you really want to get to the root of it, pick up some Old English poetry, read some Gawain in Middle English, get in some Vulgate and Mallory and de Troyes. Tolkien is basically for tourists, or all the redditors wouldn't be creaming themselves day and night over him

On this Memorial of Saint Jerome, we remember a brilliant, difficult man devoted to Scripture. His work became the core of the Vulgate. Sharp-tongued and quarrelsome, he kept returning to prayer, repentance, and Scripture. His warning lands: “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” #stjerome

One simple manner to see how the Latin tradition changed the way we read the Bible is in Isaiah 14, where the text is addressing the King of Babylon, not Satan. “Lucifer” comes from latin, meaning “light-bearer,” used in the Vulgate to translate הֵילֵל בֶּן־שָׁחַר.

THE QUARREL OVER THEOSOPHY'S LUCIFER HAS NEVER BEEN a conflict that manuscripts can settle. From the September 1887 masthead of Blavatsky’s London magazine to the later pages of The Secret Doctrine, Christian polemic has treated one identification as sufficient: any teaching in which man carries a spark, receives mind as a gift, and may become as a god is…
