#wastebaskets
#AdultingGame complete for the day. Deep cleaned the stove, cleaned the bathroom, emptied the wastebaskets.

Every time I hear her name now I think of my 6th grade English teacher, "Biddy" Stevens, who was always tossing students head first into wastebaskets, after making them spit their chewing gum into that basket. She kinda looks like her, too.
Bruh, I would too.

The disrespect that leads to a WNBA finals game tipping off at 9:30 PT is making me think of Andrew Dukowitz's story about interviewing Maya Moore in a room swarming with flies, because the wastebaskets were still full of leftover food from a catered event the night before

did you ever pick up either of these wastebaskets
October 30, 2026 at 5:19 PM
Throughout the interview, without missing a beat, Maya kept casually plucking flies out of the air with her fingers, hardly ever missing one.

The point of the story was both "how can a human being do this" and "why, for the person who can do this, can't they empty the fucking wastebaskets"

When I read "startup" I think of 4 people renting the corner of a warehouse space with little basketball nets over their wastebaskets...not a company with $80 billion to goof around with

He walked uphill to Spaulding's HQ to empty those wastebaskets, too.

Uphill both ways, in fact.

I was living at home, waiting to go to college, and working for a local custodial service as a janitor. In the mornings I drove to UMass to take a calculus course five days a week. At night, I got to empty wastebaskets and dumpsters at what was then the Spaulding company's HQ in my hometown.
Ok, that special summer, you just graduated high school, 18 years old & broke.

How did you support yourself?

I know those wastebaskets. They were way too heavy for people to steal or pick up.

My family's orange boy wasn't the kind of cat to knock over wastebaskets.

My tuxedo cat, however, once knocked pliers and a screwdriver on to my head from a shelf above me. (I still loved him, though.)

Orange cats get a bad rap.

Blue wood asters I didn't expect to see this year (esp. since damn bunnies nibbled them to the ground in August) have been budding underneath wire wastebaskets.

Maybe I can arrange some chickenwire so that we can see the blooms, and encourage the bunnies to nosh on something else. Yay?
White snakeroot is currently going crazy in our garden, tons of pollinators! (And an interesting story, in history.)

I don't have anything else flowering now, hopefully I've planted things we'll also see at this time next year.

Weed of the Month: White Snakeroot - Brooklyn Botanic Garden
This weed looks harmless, but it was once a secret scourge that probably killed Abraham Lincoln's mother.

Dominic is too danged cute ❤️

They explore all the dark spaces under furniture, open cabinets, wastebaskets, spaces behind doors, shelves in closets, etc for just the right nesting spot 🙂

Can You Flush Toilet Paper in Korea? The 2018 Law Most Guides Missed
Short answer: Yes. In South Korea you should flush used toilet paper down the bowl. A 2018 change to the Public Toilets Act enforcement decree banned wastebaskets inside toilet stalls nationwide, and the government's own instruction was blunt: put used paper in the toilet. Almost every English guide still tells travellers the opposite. Reddit threads, travel blogs and "things you can't do in Korea" listicles keep repeating a rule that stopped being the official standard on January 1, 2018.

No, anyone can do philosophy. (Cue the old joke about not needing wastebaskets)

It’s just that it’s work.

It’s like soccer: anyone can play it; not everyone is good enough to get paid. (Cue Monty Python sketch).

The biggest difference is that there aren’t clear winners in real time.

My dad’s Ford LTD was almost that long. It was a faded army green like the metal wastebaskets they had in classrooms then, with a black roof, and the a/c didn’t work so climbing into it after it being parked in the Florida sun was like getting in an oast.

Math departments are fundamentally not that expensive (as the joke goes, you need paper, pens, and wastebaskets).

And, somebody needs to teach "statistics for pre med" and "differential equations for engineers".

AI will definitely increase math budgets, but admins LOVE AI so I think they'll pay up

"Collins’ camp argues the campaign can’t be expected to keep tabs on every grassroots volunteer on its books" ???

She hired a former Oathkeeper *to run her grassroots campaign and voter outreach*. He wasn't some random schmo emptying wastebaskets .

"Why, yes, we do maintain the roads and sidewalks, and people here obey the traffic laws, so it's safe to bicycle on our streets. We also put trash in the wastebaskets instead of throwing it on the street."

I put in a bunch of other native plants, and moved others around. We'll see what comes back next year. I planted some blue wood aster (bunny chow! #mistake) and Anise Hyssop this morning. The blue wood aster is going to be under wire Dollar Tree wastebaskets probably until this time next year lol.

Today's harvest, plus a basket of potatoes that weren't paying attention for photo time.

The big bok choy/pak choi plant out is halfway complete.
It is taking us a while because we're protecting plants
from the cabbage white butterflies
as we progress.
(We use wire wastebaskets from the dollar store to do this.
This also protects them from the mafia squirrels.)

Would it be quicker to use insect netting?
Likely.
But we have the wastebaskets
(as we use them for other planting tasks)
and they work
so...
