Happy Thursday! Back in Florida, my team ran across all these fall webworms. They were absolutely fascinating, but I was particularly captivated by this lady up top! Can you see her? Green Lynx Spider

A Hornworm Tachnid Fly on a white aster. The female of this species lays her eggs on certain moth caterpillars like webworms, tent caterpillars, cutworms, and corn earworms. #InsectThursday 🌱🪰🐛

Look birds, there's free food hanging on a silk thread down off of every tree. Just fly around for a snack! Sincerely, person who is tired of removing mimosa webworms off of hat and body every day.

This week's Crawlies is on Fall Webworms

Many sources describe webs as "unsightly"

Counterpoint: This is ART ‼️ 😍

Pretty sure those are silk-nests of webworms or tent caterpillars.

Those big white webs at branch tips right now? Fall webworms — not a tree killer. They feed late season, after trees already stored next year’s energy. Don’t burn them (hurts the tree). If you must, tear the web with a stick — predators do the rest. #Nature #Webworms

I had a childhood friend who had something similar happen. We were riding bikes and he crashed into a bush covered in those guys and webworms. He had a long bad summer.

Fall webworms (Hyphantria cunea) make their tents at the ends of branches, unlike tent #caterpillars which make them in the crotches.

And despite their name you can encounter one in the summer or even spring.

These are from August.

A tiny caterpillar, possibly a common Eupithecia moth, Eupithecia miserulata. I love the stripes. It's resting on the remains of a white meadowsweet that was eaten by fall webworms I believe. It was definitely eaten by the webworms, but I'm unsure if it's meadowsweet.

Why is this wood fern curled up showing off its nether regions? Well, if you look very carefully, you may discover that a caterpillar has spun silk around it and created a home for itself. #ferns #plants #webworms #moths #bugsky

Life consumes life. Fall webworms have turned this black cherry into an all-you-can-eat buffet, stripping leaves down to lace. But nature balances the books one hardworking paper wasp momma is out collecting caterpillars to feed her babies. Circle of life, Southern style. #photography #nature #macro

Here in Central OK, since 2009 I've planted about 900 trees -- native pecans, post oaks, bur oaks, blackjack oaks & persimmons for prairie restoration. ~150 are still alive. Webworms decimated the pecans this year, though. I could've sprayed them, but, eventually, they have to survive on their own.
