Hunts Point Community Faces Uncertainty as DFO Blocks Wharfs Used by Fishers for Decades
The future of Hunts Point, a community in Nova Scotia often described as a 'quaint fishing village,' is in jeopardy as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) plans to block off sections of two wharfs used by commercial fishers for decades. Locals and fishers express concern over the closures, which will impact 21 fishers and disrupt the community's way of life. The wharfs, built over 60 years ago, have deteriorated and are deemed unsafe by DFO, leading to partial blockades that will restrict vehicle access and gear storage. Fishers like Adam Roach describe the closures as a 'slap in the face,' emphasizing the wharfs' role not only in fishing operations but also as a social hub and tourist attraction. The closures come with the upcoming lobster season starting November 30, raising questions about where fishers will depart from. DFO has stated that the wharfs will remain accessible for 'Dumping Day' but has not provided clear details on how operational adjustments will work. Michael Lunn, director of the Harbour Authority, has appealed to all levels of government for repairs or a new wharf, noting that the current structures are nearing the end of their lifespan despite patchwork repairs since 2017. Mayor Scott Christian suggests the federal government is moving fisheries away from smaller communities like Hunts Point, citing a lack of investment in infrastructure. The community's identity, tied to its 1788 heritage as a fishing village, is at risk if the wharfs are permanently closed. Local businesses, such as Hunts Point Harbour Cottages, rely on the wharfs to attract tourists, and residents like Paul Newman describe the wharfs as a 'living heritage' that should not be lost. Despite DFO's mention of long-term options including 'eventual divestiture' and the Central Port Mouton project, the community remains uncertain about its future.

Michael: "Ah learned to make pasta back in New Jersey, where ah grew up in a fisherman ferret family, so ah lived by the wharfs where ma father would catch millions of seafood in the atlantic. Ba the time I moved to Utah, ah went to culinary school an' dat's where ah got to meet Freddy."
Michael: "An' just down a few blocks is our competitors, The Red Flower Buffet, or what ah would like to call 'Duh Rotten Scoundrel Buffet', cuz dey're this big bad canivin' business that steals our recipes, mistreats their workers, and always wanna take advantage of ma beloved Freddy's talents."
Micheal: "An' dis is ma partner in crime, Freddy Maxwell Ferret, he's a woodworker at home, but he also loves to cook. Ah love everythin' he do around 'ere, he is what keeps the patrons comin' fo more. He fries duh chicken, and eats the pasta during lunch breaks. He always make me proud."

Now? Inside of me are two wharfs. One is loaded with seals while the other, apparently, supports a Jr. High brass and woodwind band (not a working spit valve or unspoiled reed among them). Dock pulleys groan and squeak through a harsh fall breeze off the water. I cough foam.

London, at the West India Quay. When I have meetings at the Ministry of Magic (where I work), I try to find hotels near the old docks, where the ships that plied the Empire's loot once stood. The lives of so many million people, so far away, tied up with these ordinary and unassuming wharfs.

I know the port is doing one but only for harbour and wharfs.
Have never heard about one (and I have former students there who would be asking for help). Maybe? I'll be on the phone in the a.m. :-)

They met each other on the wharfs surrounding a large scale dredging operation on their home planet. They spent their youth pilfering valuables brought up by the ships and selling them. They are pretty much only interested in each other, horror flicks, and food.

Even at the edge of Ashcourt's 'Water Warren', rumours clog the canal, turn it into a furred vein of trauma. People listen for the tinkling of Blackwater John's sinister necklace of bottled souls, talk of odd, unboated knocks at windows and doors of homes facing onto the cut. – #MattAdams, 1981

Someday I'd love to write something about all the words I only half know, vaguely aware of their descriptions so many borrowed from other languages describing built spaces, porticos and piazzas and parkways and wharfs. But it would be almost impossible to not look up what they actually mean
