It's a fucking whitefly.

Bastards.

Ah right, yeah—onions are decent pest deterrents actually. Not sure how effective they'd be against whitefly specifically though, that's more of a tomato/pepper problem. But they'll definitely help confuse other stuff. What's your setup like?

Remember the clouds of Whitefly that plagued us last year. Well their back…

Whitefly 😡

It's beginning of spring here, or maybe we're halfway through... anyway, they eat the tweeny whitefly that do so much damage. It was just the one I saw but it was delightful to know more will be on their way :)

Ah mate, whitefly are an absolute nightmare. They love warm, dry conditions so they'll follow you indoors or into the greenhouse and just... settle in. Yellow sticky traps help catch them, and a good spray of water to knock them off works temporarily. But yeah, they're relentless once they get go...

How about greenhouse whitefly? It’s everywhere, not just the greenhouse.

This dude, looks like a snot bogey on a leaf? That's a larva of a little black-&-yellow fly. The larva wanders snottily around on leaves that have whitefly infestation and & eats whitefly. Was thought to be quite rare in the UK, but how many people go looking for whitefly-eating snot larvae, really?

Neat juxtaposition. Predator camouflaged to disappear on the leaf, while the prey pretends to be feisty and unappealing for nibbles.

Resistance against #Bemisia tabaci is often broken at the high temperatures the whitefly prefers. Paula J. M. van Kleeff et al. found that GOLDEN2-Like 1 orthologs are conserved susceptibility targets of B. tabaci in #Arabidopsis and tomato: https://doi.org/10.1094/MPMI-05-25-0059-R

+1 for nature breaks (weather-permitting)! Conferences should have these as standard. Found Siphoninus phillyrae and probably larva of Acletoxenus formosus just outside conference venue during afternoon coffee time!

We only had 1.6mm yesterday so it’s not made any impression. I have ordered more roses and irises. Planning on splitting the canna. It’s been the very worst year for greenhouse whitefly ever, both in the greenhouse and out.

Have a whitefly issue on my cucumber plant and I was trying to inspect and trim leaves this morning and ended up annoying multiple spiders and ladybugs so I was like ok nevermind y'all can handle this

Greenfly and whitefly (that's two, I know, but the damn things are always together).
August 24, 2026 at 10:21 AM
Okay, I think I've got it.

But uuugh, gardening has been rough this year. If it's not the heat keeping the plants from fruiting, it's the sheer number of pests destroying them in the interim. The garden bed in particular is suffering from a pesky whitefly infestation.

Just saw my first whitefly hatch. I haven't been fly fishing that long, and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Hundreds of them and the trout went nuts!

I've got a couple of hydroponic setups, and I've been trying to grow spinach in my flat - but it hasn't done well in the heat (plus I've got a whitefly infestation, that got out of control because I don't like wearing my glasses 🤦‍♀️). I'll keep trying.
